The Security Industry Association (SIA) has announced the expansion of the SIA Identity and Biometric Technology Advisory Board (IBTAB) to include the former SIA Facial Recognition Working Group and the appointment of Austin Park as the new chair.
The strategic move aims to consolidate expertise in biometric and digital identification solutions under one advisory board, enhancing the SIA’s ability to promote the adoption of innovative technologies in the security industry.
The expanded IBTAB will continue its mission to guide the SIA’s engagement with both private and public sector operators of critical infrastructure. This advisory board, comprising experts in biometrics and digital identification, plays an important role in shaping the industry’s approach to securing critical assets, protecting individual identities, safeguarding proprietary data, and enhancing consumer experiences.
As part of this expansion, SIA has appointed Austin Park, the director of technology at NEC National Security Systems (NEC NSS), as the new chair of the IBTAB. Park brings over 25 years of experience in engineering advanced digital identity, biometric, and artificial intelligence solutions to his new role.
His leadership is expected to drive the board’s efforts to advocate for the effective use of these technologies, particularly in discussions with federal and state government officials, the media, and channel partners.
Commenting on his appointment, Park called it an honor, emphasizing that it comes at a time when the security and integrity of identity, and the role of biometrics and related technologies, are especially critical.
“Along with the entire board, I am committed to advancing our mission of promoting innovative and ethical solutions that secure critical assets, protect privacy and enhance consumer experiences,” he said. “I understand the collective power of collaboration and look forward to engaging with both private and public sector leaders to uphold and strengthen the standards in our industry.”
Within the Security Industry Association, Park will be well-positioned to carry through those efforts. Established in 1969, SIA serves as a leading voice for the industry.
Initially, the organization focused on the development and promotion of security technologies such as alarms, access control systems, and video surveillance. Over the years, SIA has expanded its scope to include a broader range of technologies and issues, such as biometrics, cybersecurity, and public safety.
SIA has been instrumental in shaping industry standards and providing educational resources to its members. It offers a range of programs, including training, certification, and professional development opportunities, to help security professionals stay updated on the latest trends and innovations.
The association also hosts several major events, such as ISC West and ISC East, which are among the largest security industry trade shows in the United States, providing a platform for industry leaders to showcase new products and network with peers.
