A smart lighting specialist has come up with an innovative new health tracking solution. The new Smart Health Monitoring Light from Sengled uses radar technology to read someone’s vital signs from the ceiling (or wherever it has been installed), and comes with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity that allows that bulb to share that information across an IoT network.
In terms of utility, the smart lightbulb can track someone’s sleep in addition to basic health metrics like temperature and heart rate. The bulb is designed to serve as a passive monitoring system that negates the need for dedicated wearable devices.
In that regard, there are some lingering questions about the accuracy of the bulb’s readings, especially when compared to more traditional health trackers like watches and rings that are worn directly on the body. However, the smart bulb should be able to track big movements, such as falls or other injuries. That should give it immediate utility in elder care homes, and even in private residences, where it could serve as an early warning system that allows medical professionals to respond to an incident more quickly.
Sengled unveiled the Smart Health Monitoring bulb alongside a slew of other new products at this week’s CES show in Las Vegas. The company is yet to offer any details about the potential price point, but stressed that the health tracker is still in development, and is not expected to hit store shelves until the fourth quarter of 2022. Each light can be used alone, or integrated into a mesh network of other bulbs to map behavior across a larger facility.
The radar sensing technology being used in the bulb is similar to that being used in the most recent iterations of the Google Nest Hub. Lightbulbs that can record health information would obviously need to be secure to make sure that cybercriminals cannot gain access to that data.
