Renowned security expert and cryptographer Bruce Schneier has joined the Advisory Board of Nametag Inc., a provider of integrated identity verification and account protection solutions. Schneier, who brings decades of experience in security and cryptography, will offer strategic insights to guide Nametag’s vision and enhance its identity verification capabilities at a time when deepfake and AI-generated identity threats are rapidly evolving.
As a New York Times bestselling author of 14 books and publisher of the widely-read Schneier on Security blog and newsletter, Schneier maintains several academic affiliations, including positions as a lecturer in public policy at the Harvard Kennedy School and a fellow at the Berkman-Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University.
Nametag, founded in 2020 and headquartered in Seattle, focuses on protecting enterprises from emerging threats such as digital injection attacks and AI-generated identity documents. The company’s platform integrates with major identity and access management platforms including Okta, Cisco Duo, and Microsoft Entra, providing solutions for account lockout resolution, transaction authorization, fraud prevention, and human identity proofing. The company recently launched its Deepfake Defense feature, designed specifically to combat the rising threat of AI-generated identity fraud.
“Working at the intersection of people, technology and security,” Schneier stated regarding his appointment, “I see how quickly threat actors can adapt once new technologies enter the mainstream. Nametag’s technology is already leaps ahead of legacy remote identity verification systems.”
Nametag CEO Aaron Painter characterized Schneier’s appointment as “a huge endorsement of our core Deepfake Defense technology and strategic vision for online account protection.” The appointment comes at a critical time, as financial institutions face increasing threats from sophisticated deepfake fraud schemes, according to recent warnings from the U.S. Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network.
The company has participated in several accelerator programs, including Creative Destruction Lab and Plug and Play Accelerator, and has received investment from J2 Ventures and Plug and Play Insurtech. Nametag’s platform connects user data from various sources, including IAM providers, SIEM platforms, ITSM solutions, and HRIS systems, as part of its mission to enhance online security and identity verification. This integrated approach has become increasingly important as organizations seek to defend against sophisticated identity-based attacks in an era of rapid AI advancement.
