SecuGen Unity 20 Fingerprint Security Key Gains FIDO2 Certification

SecuGen’s Unity 20 FIDO2 fingerprint security key has gained FIDO Alliance certification, adding a biometric hardware authenticator to the company’s product range. The device creates and stores passkeys for passwordless sign-in to compatible websites and applications, with a fingerprint match required to authorize access.

The certification covers FIDO2 using CTAP version 2.1, the protocol used between a client and an authenticator, at Authenticator Security Assurance Level 1. The key is listed as a roaming authenticator with the Enterprise Security Profile. A roaming authenticator is a separate device rather than an authenticator built into a computer or phone.

Unity 20 FIDO2 supports up to 10 registered fingerprints and 255 passkeys. Fingerprint templates remain on the key, and matching takes place inside it. SecuGen says fingerprint data is not transmitted to the connected computer, a website or cloud infrastructure when the key is used to sign in.

The hardware uses SecuGen’s U20-ASF platform and U20-A optical fingerprint sensor. A hardened glass capture surface is designed to withstand scratches, impacts, corrosion and electrostatic shock. The company’s Smart Capture technology is intended to handle dry, moist, aged and scarred fingers, including use in bright light.

SecuGen also supplies fingerprint technology for foundational identity systems. Its Unity 20 MOSIP device joined the MOSIP Marketplace earlier this year, supporting capture, cryptographic functions and secure device interfaces for the open-source government identity ecosystem. That national-ID device is a different product from the newly certified FIDO2 key.

The company has also worked with Precise Biometrics on embedded live-finger detection for devices aimed at MOSIP and India’s Aadhaar programs. Those applications concern government identity authentication and spoof detection, while the FIDO2 product uses a locally matched fingerprint to approve a passkey sign-in.

Headquartered in California, SecuGen designs optical sensors, original-equipment components, development kits, biometric software and ready-to-use computer peripherals. Its products serve government, financial services, healthcare, retail and manufacturing applications.

SecuGen engineering vice president Dan Riley said the key completed the conformance and interoperability testing required for certification. General availability is planned for the fourth quarter of 2026 through SecuGen and its worldwide reseller network. Resellers and system integrators can request evaluation units ahead of that release.
