SecuGen has released a new dual fingerprint and smart card reader. Called the Hamster Pro Duo SC/PIV, the device features both an FAP 20 certified fingerprint scanner and a contact-based smart card reader from Advanced Card Systems, the ACR39U.
The device has a wide range of potential applications, from border control to access control to government-issued ID. It’s also compatible with the US FIPS 201 PIV standard used for authentication of government workers, the US Transportation Worker Identification Credential, and the US Department of Defense Common Access Card Next Generation standard. Given that SecuGen emphasized the low price of the device in a statement announcing its launch—it’s the company’s “lowest priced dual mode, combination reader”—the Hamster Pro Duo SC/PIV could prove appealing to cost-conscious government departments in need of secure identification solutions.
Affordability was also a priority with SecuGen’s previous device in its Hamster line, the Hamster Pro, which launched this past February. Commenting on this latest effort, SecuGen VP of Engineering Dan Riley called it “another step in our determined effort to provide very high quality products in response to the needs of our partners,” exclaiming, “The SecuGen engineering team has once again successfully created a high quality product but at a very low price!”
