SecuGen Introduces New All-in-One Serial Fingerprint Device

SecuGen has unveiled a new standalone fingerprint system that can be used with any device that boasts a serial port. The ultra-compact Unity 20 Serial was designed to replace SecuGen’s prior ID-Serial product with a much more efficient and more affordable serial offering.

In that regard, the Unity 20 Serial is 74 percent smaller than its predecessor, and is available at a price tag that is 35 percent lower. The new device is built around SecuGen’s U20-ASF fingerprint module, which in turn comes with a U20-A optical fingerprint sensor and the company’s comprehensive Fingerprint Management System (FMS). That FMS SDK is able to perform all core fingerprint matching functions, covering the entire process from capture and template extraction all the way through to storage and authentication. It also runs entirely on-device, and matches prints without needing to connect to an external database.

Other features of the Unity 20 Serial RS232 serial interface fingerprint system include a separate DB-9 connector, a Single Board Computer with a 1 GHz CPU, and a programmable Linux system that makes it easy to integrate the reader with other hardware. The FMS extraction and matching algorithms are compliant with the NIST MINEX standard, while the FBI has certified the device for use with FIPS 201 PIV and Mobile ID FAP 20 applications.

The Unity 20 Serial has the same form factor as SecuGen’s Hamster Pro 20. However, SecuGen is planning to release a U20-ASF-SR version of the solution that comes without the housing for manufacturers that want to integrate the system into their own third-party products.

SecuGen believes that the Unity 20 Serial is well suited to Point-of-Sale and time and attendance tracking applications. The company received FAP 30 certification for its new Hamster Pro 30 sensor back in September.
