Princeton Identity has officially confirmed it is the source of the Samsung Galaxy Note8‘s iris recognition technology.

It isn’t a shocking revelation. Princeton Identity is a spinoff of Samsung partner SRI International, and was launched with Samsung Ventures’ financial backing. It also provided iris recognition technology for the pioneering Galaxy S8 devices launched earlier this year (not to mention the recalled by scarcely remembered Galaxy Note7).

In a statement confirming the providence of the technology, Princeton Identity CEO Mark Clifton pointed to the rise of biometric tech more broadly, asserting that it’s “changing the way we interact with devices” and that “we’re moving toward a world where you are the password.” Clifton added that “Samsung shares this vision” with Princeton Identity.

Indeed, unlike Apple’s big new smartphones, Samsung’s recent devices are multimodal in their biometric capabilities, supporting not only iris but also fingerprint and facial recognition. Nevertheless, Samsung has indicated that it intends to put a strong focus on iris biometrics for user authentication going forward, and it’s a fair bet that Princeton Identity will continue to play a key role in those efforts.
