“The P30 and P30+ are aimed specifically at competing with China-based in-display pioneers like Vivo and Huawei, and will thus be launched in that market only, at least initially.”
Samsung is feeling the heat from rival smartphone makers that have pioneered in-display fingerprint scanning this year, and is fast-tracking a new pair of devices to stay competitive in the China market, suggests a new report from SamMobile.
Citing a “China-based leakster”, the report says that Samsung’s new devices, called the Galaxy P30 and the P30+, will likely each feature an optical fingerprint sensor under an LCD display; whereas a more sophisticated ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor from Qualcomm will probably arrive in the Galaxy S10, Samsung’s next flagship smartphone, early next year.
The P30 and P30+ are aimed specifically at competing with China-based in-display pioneers like Vivo and Huawei, and will thus be launched in that market only, at least initially. The devices are expected to launch before the Galaxy S10, SamMobile’s report suggests.
If true, the development indicates that even as Apple seeks to lead the industry on the biometrics front with its sophisticated facial recognition system, other smartphone makers are looking to in-display fingerprint sensor technology as an alternative means of differentiating themselves. It also means there is a whole other mobile biometrics front upon which smartphone makers are battling, one from which Apple is now completely absent.
