Safran Identity & Security subsidiary Morpho Australasia has installed 51 new generation biometric eGates at the Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Queenstown airports in New Zealand.
Called SmartGates, the kiosks use facial recognition technology to match travelers’ faces against the facial biometric data in their e-passports, helping to automate the passenger screening process. They have been in place at the Auckland, Christchurch, and Wellington airports since 2009, but the new generation of kiosks also eliminate the need for ticket scanning, further speeding up passenger processing.
The upgrade and expansion is part of an effort on the New Zealand government’s part to keep up with rising tourism via its Future Investment Fund, with $6 million having been announced for such efforts in the summer of last year. Safran is also currently working with authorities in India to test biometric screening at the Bangalore Kempegowda International Airport.
