An NGO in South Africa plans to construct bullet-resistant glass playgrounds equipped with facial recognition technology and panic buttons to safeguard children from gang violence.
The initiative arises amidst the country’s ongoing gun violence crisis, where innocent children have too often become unintended victims in gang conflicts. Gun Free SA, a prominent anti-gun violence NGO, is spearheading the project, aiming to mitigate the risks faced by children in violence-prone areas.
In response to escalating violence, schools have resorted to installing ballistic-resistant fencing, and teachers instruct students to seek cover during gunfire. However, children remain vulnerable outside school premises, exposed to the threat of stray bullets.
The Bulletproof Park Project, unveiled by Gun Free SA, presents a novel solution. It features a bullet-resistant glass enclosure with panic buttons and a direct police hotline, providing a safe environment for up to 24 children to enjoy recreational activities under surveillance. The technology enables efficient monitoring and control of access, ensuring that only authorized individuals can enter the protected space.
Despite its innovative approach, the Bulletproof Park Project underscores the grim reality of gun violence’s impact on South African communities. Gun Free SA intends to submit the proposal to the City of Cape Town for approval, acknowledging the project’s unfortunate necessity in combating the epidemic.
