After a long hiatus, Russia is willing to resume flights to Egypt, but the government wants biometric security in Egyptian airports, according to a report from Daily News Egypt.
The planes stopped flying last year in the wake of a deadly terror attack against a Russian flight out of Egypt that killed all 224 passengers and crew aboard, for which ISIL claimed responsibility. Now, Russian authorities are in negotiations with Egyptian counterparts to resume flights, but the Russians insist upon biometric access control at Egyptian airports, among other security measures.
The Egyptian Holding Company for Airports and Air Navigation (EHCAAN) has entrusted the project to the Armed Forces Arming Authority, and EHCAAN head Ismail Aboul Ezz has now told Daily News Egypt that an international company has been contracted to provide the necessary biometric readers.
It’s an example of the increasing popularity and importance of biometric security, not just with respect to border control, but in civil security applications, particularly as a response to terrorism concerns. Germany’s Interior Minister has also recently called for biometric surveillance systems to be installed in his country’s airports and train stations in response to recent terror incidents.
