Last week at FindBiometrics we were in Shanghai for the most recent Mobile World Congress event held by the GSMA. Border Control & National ID Month came to a close in our featured articles section and the industry news was filled with face, fingerprint, and iris biometrics.
Here’s a look back on the top identity management stories from last week.
Mobile World Congress Shanghai
Mobile World Congress Shanghai took place last week and FindBiometrics president Peter O’Neill was there to moderate two sessions on cyber security and mobile identity respectively. Biometrics company Sensory was part of the event, with CEO Todd Mozer highlighting the role of face and voice recognition in the connected world, and NTT Docomo (the first MNO to offer smartphone iris recognition) made a splash, boasting that it is five to ten years ahead of its industry peers—an assertion that is difficult to argue against when it comes to identity and security. Be sure to check out our sister site, Mobile ID World, for more MWC Shanghai coverage from last week.

National ID and Border Control
Border Control & National ID Month came to a close on Wednesday and we looked back on all of the major related headlines and featured content from June with a roundup. The featured topics were still making headlines too, with Singapore joining the US Global Entry program, and national ID news out of Liberia and India respectively.

Face Recognition
Face recognition was in the news last week with results coming in from the MegaFace Challenge and illustrating that the technology still has a long way to go before satisfactory matching can be achieved on truly massive scales. That bears no reflection on the modalities popularity or smaller scale efficacy, however. Sighthound launched a new face recognition system for mobile apps last week while Allied Market Research forecasted the facial recognition market as hitting $9.6 billion by the end of the decade.

Fingerprints
Last week, Shinhan Bank enabled fingerprint based, FIDO Certified authentication for its mobile app, rumors emerged that Samsung is redesigning the Galaxy smartphone fingerprint sensor to look a bit more like Apple’s Touch ID, and Synaptics brought its Natural ID sensors to a new phone from a Chinese vendor. Meanwhile, the Nubia Z11 was launched with a Fingerprint Cards sensor powered by Precise Biometrics software and we took a look at FingerSCAN DecedentID—a biometric forensics tool that can identify the dead.
