Last week FindBiometrics was reporting live from Mobile World Congress in Barcelona (MWC 2017), along with our sister site Mobile ID World. The conference was filled to the brim with big fingerprint biometrics news, while elsewhere in the industry we reported on national ID, enterprise applications, and contactless modalities.
Take a look back on the biggest stories from the most active week of 2017 in biometrics so far:
Healthcare Biometrics Month Ends, Mobile Biometrics Month Begins
We wrapped up our featured coverage on healthcare biometrics last week, rounding up our featured content and event coverage from February. But with the closing of one featured focus comes the opening of another. March is Mobile Biometrics Month 2017, and to kick things off right we published a primer on the state of the mobility space. We also opened registration for our first webinar of 2017, From Revolution to Evolution: The New Mobile Biometrics Landscape. Register now at the link below!

Mobile World Congress
Along with the launch of Mobile Biometrics Month, Mobile World Congress took place in Barcelona last week and biometrics were once again a major part of the festivities. From the GLOMO Awards, to product launches and reports, and from the exhibition floor to Innovation City where we interviewed GSMA’s head of Applications & Services David Pollington—biometrics and digital identity were all over MWC. Take a look below at our joint coverage with Mobile ID World.

Mobile Fingerprint Biometrics
It is fair to say that, in spite of industry-wide trends toward multimodality, fingerprint biometrics hogged the spotlight at MWC 2017. Fingerprint Cards, Goodix, Egis Tech, and Suprema all launched new fingerprint solutions in Barcelona last week, while major OEMs like Xiaomi, Huawei, and even BlackBerry unveiled new devices featuring sensors that enable strong authentication with the touch of a finger.
Outside of the conference we were still talking fingerprints too, with a new Apple patent reviving rumors about the possibility of in-display Touch ID, and a rugged tablet having integrated Suprema’s fingerprint tech. Take a look at all of last week’s major mobile fingerprint biometrics headlines.

Enterprise ID
ImageWare was awarded the 2017 North American Frost & Sullivan Award for New Product Innovation, we reported last week, with the growth consultancy highlighting the biometrics company’s enterprise offerings in a statement announcing the award. Meanwhile, we looked back on the recent RSA conference, which served as an example of how and why FIDO Alliance standards are catching on in the enterprise.

Face and Iris Recognition
Face and iris biometrics shared increased attention at MWC last week thanks to the announcement that Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon processor supports both contactless modalities. IriTech and Egis Tech meanwhile, teamed up to attack the new markets emerging from increased connectivity, and we reported on new LEDs meant to enhanced mobile face and iris biometric scanning. Uni-ID embraced Safran’s facial recognition solution too, while new research from Michigan State University shed light on the effects of age on face biometrics.

Business Operations and Corporate Updates
Aware announced that its co-CEO, co-President, CFO, and Treasure Richard Moberg is preparing to step down from his many positions with the company. Meanwhile Green Bit Systems appointed a new vice president of sales in the US.
Turning to other business matters, NEXT Biometrics issued its year-end and Q4 2016 update last week, and Precise Biometrics announced the nomination committee proposals for its upcoming AGM. Take a look at the business operations and personnel changes that made the news last week:

National ID
National ID made the news last week, with legislation passing in Israel mandating biometric ID. In India, meanwhile, Aadhaar was linked to railway tickets as we considered Safran’s proposal that the ambitious national ID program could have important educational impact in the country.
