ROC has appointed biometric researcher Anil K. Jain to its board of directors, effective October 5. Jain is a University Distinguished Professor at Michigan State University whose research spans pattern recognition, computer vision and biometric identification.
The Denver-based company, formally Rank One Computing Corporation, develops biometric, video analytics and digital evidence products. Its Vision AI platform applies computer vision to identity checks, security and investigative work across national security, public safety and commercial markets.
Jain began his career at Michigan State in 1974 and has spent five decades developing methods for recognizing patterns and identifying people through biometric characteristics. His research has been patented, licensed and deployed in operational systems used by government, security and commercial organizations. He earned his Bachelor of Technology at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur and his master’s and doctoral degrees in electrical engineering at Ohio State University.
His publications include 15 books covering biometrics, facial recognition, fingerprint recognition and data clustering. He previously served as editor-in-chief of IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence and was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Engineering. His public-service roles have included the Defense Science Board and the Forensic Science Standards Board.
ROC CEO B. Scott Swann said he has worked with Jain for nearly two decades. Swann said the appointment brings expertise aligned with the company’s multimodal biometric technology and identity security work. Co-founder and Chief Scientist Brendan Klare said Jain would provide scientific and engineering guidance as the company develops its products.
Jain said he intends to contribute his research experience as ROC expands its technology capabilities. The company expects his board role to help inform research-led development of its Vision AI platform.
Jain shared the 2025 BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in Information and Communication Technologies with Michael I. Jordan, recognizing their work in biometrics and artificial intelligence.
ROC has recently completed its acquisition of Zuccaro Technical Consulting, adding digital forensics to ROC Evidence. The portfolio also includes ROC Watch video analytics and ROC ABIS, an automated biometric identification system. Its first federal ABIS contract carries a potential five-year value of $5.1 million, including options, with $2.5 million committed. That award includes implementation services and ongoing system support.
