Club Atlético River Plate, one of Argentina’s premier football clubs, has partnered with Veridas, a Spanish technology company specializing in digital identity and biometrics, to introduce a biometric ticketing system at its home stadium, Estadio Monumental. The system employs facial recognition technology to streamline and secure fan access during matches and events.
Veridas, established in 2017 as a joint venture between BBVA bank and technology firm das-Nano, has rapidly expanded its presence in the digital identity verification sector. The company’s biometric solutions incorporate facial recognition algorithms and liveness detection capabilities that have been independently tested for accuracy and anti-spoofing effectiveness. Their technology platform, which recently launched on Google Cloud Marketplace, serves over 250 clients across banking, telecommunications, and public administration sectors in 25 countries.
This implementation at River Plate joins a growing trend of biometric access control systems in sports venues. Similar deployments have emerged in Cyprus and other regions, where facial recognition technology is being utilized to enhance security and combat issues like ticket scalping and unauthorized entry. The system works by matching live facial captures against pre-registered biometric templates, enabling contactless verification of ticket holders’ identities in real-time.
“It is an honor to collaborate with a club as prestigious as River Plate,” commented Veridas CEO Eduardo Azanza. “Our robust, efficient, and secure solution ensures an unparalleled experience for fans. This partnership sets a new standard for how football is experienced in Argentina and beyond.”
The implementation of Veridas’ biometric ticketing system aims to expedite entry processes, reduce wait times, and bolster security by accurately verifying ticket holders’ identities. The technology includes privacy-preserving features that comply with international data protection standards, with biometric data being encrypted and processed in accordance with regulatory requirements.
River Plate, founded in 1901 and boasting numerous domestic and international titles, becomes one of the first major South American football clubs to implement comprehensive biometric access control. This deployment represents a significant step in modernizing stadium operations, following similar initiatives by major sports venues in Europe and North America that have integrated biometric technologies to enhance operational efficiency and security while improving the fan experience.
