Regula has reported strong results in the latest update of the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST) Face Analysis Technology Evaluation (FATE) – Age Estimation & Verification (AEV). The company says its technology ranked among the best overall and placed in the top three for two policy-relevant scenarios, underscoring its growing role in age verification markets.
Performance in Challenge-25 and child safety
According to Regula’s announcement, its algorithm delivered the most accurate overall age estimation result among participating vendors. It also achieved top-three scores in the Challenge-25 scenario, designed to help businesses identify individuals under 25 for ID checks in age-restricted transactions, and in the Child Online Safety category for ages 13 to 16. These are among the most closely watched use cases for automated age estimation as regulators increase pressure on both retail operators and online service providers.
The company noted that its solution maintained consistency across diverse regions including Europe, East Africa, and Asia. This broad applicability supports deployment in global compliance frameworks where demographic performance has been a longstanding concern.
Independent testing in context
NIST’s FATE AEV benchmark assesses the accuracy and reliability of algorithms estimating age from facial images. The program publishes results on a rolling basis, allowing developers to refine their submissions and improve over time. By emphasizing both accuracy and demographic consistency, the evaluation helps identify solutions suitable for real-world applications where traditional document checks are either impractical or too intrusive.
For organizations involved in retail, digital services, and content regulation, accurate age estimation is increasingly important. Policy frameworks around online safety and restricted goods continue to evolve, and market adoption is likely to favor technologies that show strong results in standardized benchmarks.
Building on momentum
The announcement follows a series of developments that demonstrate Regula’s growing presence in the identity verification market. Earlier this year the company was named an Innovation Leader in KuppingerCole’s 2025 Leadership Compass for Identity Verification, with analysts citing its in-house R&D and advanced liveness detection capabilities. Regula has also delivered practical deployments, such as its integration with iCard’s digital wallet, which embedded the company’s Face SDK and Document Reader SDK into services across more than 30 countries.
