Rank One Brings Face Algorithm to ‘True Biometric Hash’ Solution

Facial recognition specialist Rank One will see its technology used in a new cryptographic identity solution from Singapore-based Infinity Optics.

The latter’s solution is dubbed “QuantumCrypt”, and is designed to take a different approach to biometric cryptography. Rather than the conventional method established a biometric template and then encrypting it, QuantumCrypt seeks to directly convert biometric data into what Infinity Optics calls a “True Biometric Hash” code, immediately at the time of capture. This means that there is no need to store images or encrypted templates, further ensuring that the biometric data cannot be intercepted by malefactors.

Rank One will be Infinity Optics’ biometric partner in the development of this platform, with the former having established itself as a leading provider of facial recognition technology through National Institute of Standards and Technology testing. In a recent round of NIST Face Recognition Vendor Test evaluations, Rank One showed impressive results in scanning ‘Mugshot’ and ‘Visa Border’ photos, and in the categories of ‘Template Generation Speed’ and ‘Compare Speed’.

In a statement announcing the Infinity Optics partnership, Rank One asserted that its algorithm is “the single-highest performer in the Quality series, and in the 1:1 and 1:N series” of FRVT testing, adding that it “demonstrates top-tier accuracy with 2-5x faster and 10-20x more efficient results than competitors.”

For Infinity Optics’ part, the company’s CEO, Alfred Chan, believes that Rank One’s technology is contributing to a “disruptive” technology solution in the field of biometric identity verification.

“We have simplified the process using an advanced biometric cryptographic solution to personalize cryptographic keys so you do not have to rely on complex and costly protocols to protect sensitive biometric data, no tokenization process required to produce cryptographic keys,” he explained. “Our True Biometric Hash technology enables this in a single step without the need to collect nor store any fragments of biometric data or digital templates, no encoding decoding of templates required.”

The partnership’s announcement comes just a few months after Rank One’s launch of a new database-scanning tool designed to operate on a commercial laptop, dubbed “Rank One Explore“. The companies have not yet offered a timeline for when QuantumCrypt can be expected to reach the commercial market.
