Precise Biometrics’ YOUNiQ Platform Gets Passive Liveness Detection

Precise Biometrics has added liveness detection to its YOUNiQ biometric platform, the company has announced.

First announced earlier this year, the YOUNiQ platform represents Precise Biometrics’ expansion beyond the kind of fingerprint biometrics algorithm software that has been its specialty over the years. The platform is still in development, but Precise has previously revealed that it incorporates facial recognition, and announced in summer that it was being piloted in physical access control applications.

In its latest announcement, the company explained that YOUNiQ now features passive liveness detection, meaning it can detect whether an authorized user is indeed physically present during a scan, helping to thwart spoofing attempts such as presentation attacks using a 2D printout of an authorized user. Precise Biometrics indicated that the system is based on “internal algorithms” and requires no special action from a given user.

“The combination of passive facial recognition and passive liveness detection is a first of its kind within identification software for access control systems, paving the way for a seamless and more secure user experience,” explained Precise Biometrics CTO Tom Søberg. “We already have several ongoing pilot projects with partners in various sectors and are working hard with preparations for the commercialization.”

The announcement arrives on the heels of Precise’s Q3 update, in which CEO Stefan K. Persson suggested that the company expects YOUNiQ to enter a commercialization phase next year.
