Biometric software from Precise Biometrics is being used in a new door lock from Xiaomi. Called the Xiaomi Mijia Smart Door Lock, the device features Precise BioMatch Embedded fingerprint algorithm software.
In a brief statement announcing the integration, Precise Biometrics noted that it “is not expected to have any substantial financial impact” in its business efforts. Nevertheless, the integration may point to a shift in the company’s strategy: While Precise Biometrics established itself as a leading provider of fingerprint algorithm software for smartphones over the course of the mobile biometrics revolution of the last few years, it has sought to diversify its business activities as the mobile market in particular has become more saturated and competitive, and ASPs for its fingerprint sensor partners have fallen.
And while Precise Biometrics has long promoted Precise BioMatch Embedded as a solution for devices outside of the mobile sector, such as the Internet of Things, the timing of the Xiaomi Mijia Smart Door Lock integration fits squarely within the company’s current restructuring effort, in which it is consolidating its operations in Sweden, intensifying its focus on the APAC market with a new Shanghai office, and expanding into new modalities. In that context, this integration can be seen both as a continuation of Precise Biometrics’ specialty – providing fingerprint algorithm software for smart devices – and as the latest integration outside of the mobile sector that has been its bailiwick.
