“While the ultrasonic scanning is enabled by the sensor hardware, their biometric matching is the product of Precise Biometrics’ flagship software platform, Precise BioMatch Mobile.”
Precise Biometrics algorithm software is being used in Qualcomm’s new ultrasonic fingerprint sensors, the company has revealed.
The sensors were announced at last week’s Mobile World Congress Shanghai event, where they made a splash with their ability to scan through metal, glass, and an OLED display. While the ultrasonic scanning is enabled by the sensor hardware, their biometric matching is the product of Precise Biometrics’ flagship software platform, Precise BioMatch Mobile.
The development appears to be a culmination of longstanding efforts, with Precise Biometrics CEO Håkan Persson having noted in a fiscal update last summer that the company’s new partnership with Qualcomm “holds great potential.”
Various companies – biometrics specialists and major smartphone brands like Apple – have been working intensively to pioneer in-display fingerprint sensors in recent months. For its part, Qualcomm has indicated that its in-display sensors will be available to OEMs starting in Q4 of this year, while devices featuring its sensors that can scan through glass and metal will reach the market in 2018.
