Precise Biometrics and NXP Semiconductors are teaming up on contactless biometric payment cards.
The collaboration’s announcement comes just about a week after Precise Biometrics unveiled Precise BioMatch Card, an adaptation of its Precise BioMatch Embedded fingerprint algorithm solution that is tailored for smart card and payment card integrations. Precise BioMatch Card will be integrated into a contactless fingerprint scanning card featuring NXP’s Secure Element technology.
This appears to be the same biometric card project alluded to last autumn when NXP announced it was working with Fingerprint Cards on a contactless payment card solution that would use the latter’s fingerprint sensor technology. FPC hardware has frequently been paired with Precise Biometrics software – most often in smartphone deployments, though the companies worked together on a Visa-led trial of biometric payment cards earlier this year.
In a statement announcing this latest partnership, Precise Biometrics Chairman Torgny Hellström underlined the growing importance of the biometric cards market to his company, asserting, “We see contactless payments growing rapidly, and our combined solution significantly improves convenience for consumers while increasing the security of payments.”
Precise Biometrics says the collaboration is expected to start generating licensing and support-based revenues in Q2 of this year.
