Precise Biometrics Launches Card Solution

Precise Biometrics has officially unveiled its new fingerprint matching algorithm solution for the smart card market, dubbed Precise BioMatch Card.

It isn’t an entirely new solution, but rather an adaptation of Precise BioMatch Embedded, the company’s offering for Internet of Things devices and other products outside of smartphones and tablets. The company has taken the essential fingerprint matching technology from that solution and configured it as its own, standalone solution aimed primarily at smart cards. It is capable of matching a fingerprint within a Secure Element, and Precise Biometrics says it can support fingerprint sensors as small as 30mm².

This is the same technology used in AirPlus’s pioneering contactless biometric payment card trial last year, and in Visa’s first trial of biometric payment card technology earlier this year, a pilot project that also involved fingerprint sensor maker Fingerprint Cards and card solutions provider Kona I. But its official branding and launch as a new branch of Precise Biometrics’ flagship solutions portfolio – alongside Precise BioMatch Mobile and Precise BioMatch Embedded – illustrates Precise Biometrics’ growing focus on the rapidly emerging biometric payment cards market.

In a statement, Precise Biometrics Chairman of the Board Torgny Hellström put it plainly. “Smart cards is the next growth area for fingerprint technology,” he said, pointing out that there are over three billion payment cards issued globally per annum. “As a frontrunner in the development of biometric payment cards, it’s important for us to provide Precise BioMatch Card that specifically addresses this market,” he added.
