PopID is moving forward with the expansion of its PopPay platform. To that end, the company has announced that the naked payments solution is now accepted at dozens of restaurants and retail establishments throughout the city of Pasadena, California.
PopID is hoping that that local support will encourage more Pasadena residents to create PopPay accounts. The company will then execute the same strategy in other cities as it seeks to build its clientele and create a dense ecosystem of participating partners.
In that regard, PopID indicated that it plans to lead with PopEntry before offering PopPay. PopEntry is an employee-facing solution that leverages facial recognition for logins and access control. PopPay, on the other hand, allows users to link a debit or credit card to their biometric information, which in turn allows them to verify future transactions with only a facial recognition scan. The contactless system is designed to replace cash and physical cards, as well as phone-based systems like Apple Pay.
“In each new city we enter, we initially focus on installing PopEntry systems in the workplace and on local college campuses,” said PopID CEO John Miller. “As these communities grow comfortable using PopID to check in, we enlist area restaurants and retailers to offer PopPay for transactions.”
According to PopID, a PopPay check can be executed at the drive-thru, in-store at a kiosk, or at a restaurant table with a tablet. The company noted that users can opt out of the system, drawing a distinction between public surveillance systems and private systems that require the user’s consent.
