PlainID Report Finds More Companies Implementing Authorization Policies

PlainID has published a new report that suggests that large companies are looking beyond simple authentication, and are increasingly worried about having a consistent access control policy for their entire organization. In that regard, the company’s latest State of Access and Authorization Report found that authorization has eclipsed strong authentication as the top priority for IT professionals in the US, the UK, and Canada.

According to the report, the shift to authorization reflects the need for standardized access control solutions. Identity and access management has become increasingly complex in recent years, with more and more employees accessing sensitive corporate materials online and remotely through the cloud. Having different access control procedures for different parts of the organization creates more logistical headaches for the IT department, and adds friction and confusion for rank-and-file employees.

With that in mind, the PlainID report indicates that more companies are looking to standardize their access control procedures. More than half (62 percent) of the professionals surveyed listed run-time access as a top priority, with API access control and policy-based access trailing shortly behind as a point of focus for 51 percent and 43 percent, respectively.

As it stands, the overwhelming majority (96 percent) of large organizations have either implemented or are planning to implement an authorization policy. Roughly one third are still formulating a plan, while another third have done their prep and are ready to deploy, and the remaining third have their authorization strategy already in place. The respondents identified standardization and the desire to scale as their top motivations when developing an authorization framework.

The interest in authorization speaks to the ongoing digital transformation of the security industry. Trustmatic has predicted that the use of passwords will decline as organizations search for more secure authentication options.
