Philadelphia International Airport (“PHL”) has completed its installation of 25 biometric passenger screening gates, deployed in Terminal A of the airport. The deployment’s completion comes after PHL first implemented the CBP’s “Simplified Arrival” facial recognition system in 2021.
The successful deployment of the transformative biometric technology was the result of close collaboration among multiple agencies and internal departments at PHL. Working closely with CBP, airline partners, and teams within PHL such as IT, Operations, Security, and Guest Experience, the project was completed within six months without disrupting daily operations. The implementation involved the installation of 50 biometric units at 25 gates across Terminal A, showcasing the airport’s commitment to seamless and secure travel.
With the assistance of industry vendors SITA and NEC, the biometric screening technology has already shown positive results since portions of the system became operational in October 2022. In addition to enhancing security measures, the technology has reduced wait times, helping to provide passengers with a more seamless travel experience.
PHL says it plans to expand the biometric technology to other gates in the future, with the aim of ensuring that more passengers will enjoy the benefits of biometric screening.
