A key patent for a new behavioral biometrics system has received approval from the US Patent and Trademark Office.
Called “User Authentication Via Input of Known Text”, the patent belongs to Intensity Analytics, and underlies the company’s user authentication system. It’s designed to track a given user’s typing patterns, generating a unique user profile that can be used to thwart identity theft and related kinds of fraud.
As Intensity Analytics CEO John Rome explains in a statement, the system is “based on multidimensional, geospatial algorithms which compose standard add-in software components,” which “can be readily deployed – quickly, inexpensively, and in a highly-scalable manner – without collecting any personally identifiable information.”
The system joins a growing number of other behavioral biometrics solutions in an emerging field of authentication technology. Intensity Analytics cites a Gartner prediction that such systems will, over the next three years, “become the preferred systems for security operations,” but at a recent Black Hat conference there was also a claim that such technology can be spoofed—in indication of the nascent state of the art.
In any case, with this important patent secured, and new funding bringing its coffers to almost $5 million, Intensity Analytics is in a good position to establish itself as a behavioral biometrics pioneer.
