Panasonic has put a name to its new face scanning system, and is putting it in the spotlight at this week’s ISC West expo in Las Vegas.

First announced in February, the facial recognition software is designed to allow law enforcement and security organizations to scan video feeds for wanted criminals and other persons of interest. It can recognize faces even if they’re turned 45 degrees left or right, or 30 degrees up or down; and it attained the highest ranking in the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s IJB-A challenge last spring.

Now, Panasonic has given it a brand name: FacePRO. And the company is emphasizing its enhanced functionality when used together with its “i-PRO EXTREME” cameras featuring the Best Shot License Key, which allows only the most readable images to be sent to the server for facial recognition, reducing the processing burden on the system.

The solution has already been embraced by government authorities in Japan for a biometric airport security project, and Panasonic is evidently hoping to attract more interest in FacePRO at ISC West, where the company is showcasing its solution from booth #10037.
