Pakistan Requires Biometric Sponsor Verification for Russian Visa Applicants

Pakistan has introduced a biometric verification requirement for Russian nationals applying for Pakistani visas, mandating that their sponsors complete a biometric check through the country’s PakID application. The Embassy of Pakistan in Russia has notified applicants that visa requests submitted without the sponsor verification will not be processed.

The requirement attaches the biometric step to the sponsor rather than the traveler. Russian applicants apply through Pakistan’s online visa portal, run by the Ministry of Interior, submitting a valid passport and a recent photograph, while the sponsor backing the application must verify their identity biometrically via PakID. Tying the check to the sponsor is intended to confirm that a real, identifiable party in Pakistan stands behind each visa request.

PakID is the mobile channel through which that verification runs. The application is part of Pakistan’s national identity infrastructure operated by the National Database and Registration Authority, and it lets users complete identity steps, including biometric confirmation, from a phone rather than in person at an office. Routing sponsor verification through PakID extends that biometric identity capability into the visa-sponsorship process.

The change sits alongside other procedural conditions for the route. The embassy’s notice specifies that applicants must submit their travel intentions ahead of departure to obtain a visa grant notice, with tourist visas issued for up to 90 days and allowing multiple entries, and with certain land border crossings excluded for travelers holding a visa issued prior to arrival. The biometric sponsor check is the identity-verification core of the updated requirements.

Pakistan has been steadily building biometric checks into its identity systems through NADRA. The authority has expanded face-based verification across its services, including digital ID storage and face verification in the Pak ID app, and has introduced facial recognition options for biometric verification, the same infrastructure now applied to visa sponsorship.
