OwnID has launched a new plugin enabling passkey support for Shopify Plus stores, further clearing the way for the innovative passwordless authentication solution to proliferate across the internet.
Developed as a collaborative effort between Apple, Google, Microsoft, the FIDO Alliance, and W3C, the passkey solution is designed to generate complex passcodes for each of a user’s online accounts, and to lock them behind the biometric authentication mechanisms available on the user’s smartphone. It has been hailed as a potentially game-changer in cybersecurity for everyday consumers, and has already been embraced by major online platforms like PayPal.
For its part, OwnID launched a WordPress plugin that brought passkey support to sites with WooCommerce stores last month. Now, the company’s newest plugin is bringing passkey support to owners of websites using the Shopify Plus e-commerce platform, further extending the reach of the security solution.
In announcing the plugin, OwnID said that case studies on sites that have deployed its solution have demonstrated a 20 percent improvement in conversion rates and a 35 percent reduction of “user drop-offs”. The metrics can be attributed to the convenience of passwordless authentication, which enables consumers to easily complete purchases without having to remember complex account credentials.
OwnID says it designed the implementation process for its passkey solution to be as simple as possible, enabling interested site owners to easily connect the Shopify plugin to the OwnID solution using an API key.
