New federal legislation that will render millions of American workers eligible for overtime pay is prompting BioConnect to point out the advantages of biometric time and attendance tracking.
In a blog post on its website, the company points out that the Fair Labor Standards Act, or FLSA, will come into effect on December 1st. When it does, about 4.2 million workers who are currently exempt from overtime pay will become eligible for it. That means anyone making less than $47,000 who works over 40 hours a week must be paid time and a half for the extra hours.
While that’s great news for a lot of workers, it’s clearly going to add a little pressure to HR administrators as they seek to properly account for the extra paid work. That’s where biometric attendance tracking comes in. For one thing, the technology can help stamp out buddy punching, a practice that at least some individuals will be tempted to take part in for some extra overtime pay. More importantly, it allows for much greater administrative efficiency. BioConnect’s Claire Scholz sums it up in one word: “Automation.” Digital attendance tracking can cut down tremendously on time-consuming paperwork, while biometric scanning ensures that attendance is tracked accurately.
This kind of technology has been rolled out in all kinds of settings around the world, from government offices in India to a sugar mill in El Salvador. And with the FLSA coming into play, there could soon be many more instances in the US.
