The OpenID Foundation (OIDF) will host a global virtual demonstration on May 5, 2025, showcasing the next generation of digital identity credentials. Designed to validate real-world interoperability across identity platforms, the event will bring together major tech companies, government agencies, and standards organizations in a coordinated push toward secure, user-friendly digital identity systems.
Industry Collaboration on Interoperability Standards
Running from 4:30 to 6:00 PM CET (10:30 AM–12:00 PM ET / 7:30–9:00 AM PT), the online event will feature ten collaborative teams of wallet and verifier providers. Participants include Google, Microsoft, 1Password, and the NIST National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE). Each team will demonstrate the exchange and verification of credentials using three core specifications: OpenID for Verifiable Presentations (OID4VP), the High Assurance Interoperability Profile (HAIP), and the Digital Credentials API (DC API). These standards are intended to enable credential exchange between diverse systems, solving a longstanding challenge in the digital identity space.
“As more organizations prepare to issue and verify digital credentials at scale, the single biggest barrier to seamless user experiences is interoperability – getting disparate systems to ‘speak the same language,’” said the OpenID Foundation in its event announcement.
Credential Formats and International Participation
Demonstrated credentials will include formats such as ISO/IEC 18013-5 mobile driver’s licenses and IETF Selective Disclosure JSON Web Tokens (SD-JWTs). These standards allow for privacy-preserving credential sharing, giving users greater control over what information is revealed in digital interactions. The event is expected to show how these credential formats can be issued, presented, and verified across platforms using standardized interfaces.
The OpenID Foundation also confirmed that government representatives from multiple countries will take part in the event, reflecting growing international coordination on digital identity infrastructure. While the participating governments have not been named, their involvement underscores the global significance of interoperable identity technologies. This demonstration follows a series of successful showcases by the Foundation that have served to validate emerging specifications through collaboration with both public and private stakeholders.
The demonstration comes at a time of accelerating momentum in digital ID development worldwide. Recent efforts such as Switzerland’s technical framework for a national digital identity system and new ISO standards supporting remote identity verification highlight the urgent need for common standards that allow digital credentials to work across borders and systems. The OpenID Foundation’s event aims to address that need by proving the viability of interoperable, user-centric identity solutions in real-world conditions.
