OpenID Foundation Reports Strong mDL Interoperability Results at La Ciotat Event

The OpenID Foundation says a significant number of implementations passed its conformance tests at the 13th ISO mobile driving licence interoperability test event, a result it reads as a sign that the standards behind remote mDL presentation are nearing real-world deployment. The foundation brought its conformance test suite to the event in La Ciotat, France, testing implementations against the specifications that govern how a mobile driving licence is presented and verified.

The testing centered on the standards stack for mDLs. Implementations were checked against ISO/IEC 18013-5 and ISO/IEC TS 18013-7, the standards for in-person and remote mDL presentation, alongside OpenID for Verifiable Presentations 1.0 and the High Assurance Interoperability Profile 1.0, the open specifications that handle how a credential is requested and returned online. Conformance testing is what establishes that independently built systems can actually interoperate rather than only claiming to.

The foundation framed the pass rate as a maturity signal. A significant number of OpenID for Verifiable Presentations and High Assurance Interoperability Profile implementations passed on the day, and implementations that needed refinement received detailed feedback to resolve their issues, with the event also generating input to improve the tests themselves.

“The number of successful implementations we saw in La Ciotat is a strong signal that OpenID for Verifiable Presentations and HAIP are ready for real-world deployment,” said Joseph Heenan, Standards Specialist and Certification Director at the OpenID Foundation. The conformance tests for the relevant profiles are open source and freely available, which the foundation positions as a way to let implementers self-check before formal certification.

The event fits the broader push to make mDLs work across systems and borders. The remote-presentation standard, ISO/IEC TS 18013-7, enables online identity verification via mobile driver’s license using OpenID for Verifiable Presentations, and the OpenID Foundation has been demonstrating the next-generation digital ID specifications with major technology partners. The La Ciotat results add interoperability evidence to that standards work.
