Onfido has obtained ETSI TS 119 461 certification, elevating its profile as a provider of identity solutions in the European Union and beyond.
ETSI TS 119 461 is the latest EU technical standard for identity proofing and trust services, established by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute, or ETSI. Attaining certification against the standard confirms Onfido as an Identity Proofing Service Provider (IPSP) for Qualified Trust Service Providers (QTSPs) — essentially verifying that the latter can use Onfido’s technology for identity verification.
“Regulation is essential for ensuring secure access to online services, preventing fraudulent activity and encouraging innovation,” explains Onfido’s General Counsel, Francesca Porter. “ETSI TS 119 461 for identity verification provides a new standard for security, interoperability and assurance across the industry while setting the foundation for issuing trust services in future, such as qualified electronic signatures (QES).”
While the certification pertains specifically to the European Union, it has global business implications for Onfido. As the company notes, its certification will highlight Onfido as a clear potential partner for any organization requiring identity verification services that is looking to expand its presence in Europe. And the stringent EU standards to which the certification attests will help to further bolster Onfido’s credibility in other markets.
That’s especially true after Onfido obtained H1A certification under the UK Digital Identity and Attributes Trust Framework earlier this year. The H1A standard pertains to solutions offering a high level of confidence in an identity check based on a single piece of evidence, such as a passport.
“We will continue to support organisations in meeting their compliance needs with resources dedicated to tracking regulation as it evolves and factoring it into our product roadmap,” said Porter.
The news comes after Onfido’s acquisition of Airside, a pioneer in mobile-based digital identity for air travel, last month.
