Onfido Brings AI-Driven Anti-Fraud Security to DocuSign Platform

DocuSign has added selfie-based identity verification to its digital document signing platform, thanks to a partnership with Onfido.

The latter’s biometric technology uses facial recognition to match a document signer, captured through live video, to their photo ID. Onfido’s ‘Liveness Detection for ID Verification’ solution scans for any signs of spoofing and ensures that the document signer was not using a fake webcam or emulator, and was physically present during the transaction.

In announcing the move, DocuSign gestured to the growing threat of fake documents and deepfake technology, which can be used for identity spoofing through remote channels — and emphasized the importance of using sophisticated artificial intelligence and biometrics technologies to counter these threats.

“We’re infusing our entire product suite with AI to provide global customers with frictionless experiences that are smarter, easier and more trusted,” explained DocuSign’s President of Product & Technology, Inhi Cho Suh. “Liveness Detection for ID Verification applies the power of artificial intelligence to live video selfies to provide the equivalent of face-to-face security without the inconvenience of showing up in person.”

DocuSign has looked to AI not only to enhance the security of its digital signature platform, but also to improve its usability. The company recently launched an ‘Agreement Summarization’ tool that leverages Azure’s OpenAI Service to automatically highlight the most important parts of a given document, in order to help signatories better understand it.

Onfido’s biometric and liveness detection technology likewise improve the user experience, even as they enhance security, by offering an identity verification tool that has been integrated directly into DocuSign’s eSignature workflow.

As Onfido CEO Mike Tuchen explained, DocuSign’s work “aligns with our goal of preventing fraud while simplifying the identity verification process for organizations across the globe.”
