The certification comes at a time when age verification technologies are under increasing scrutiny. Recent concerns have been raised about the maturity and reliability of facial age estimation technologies, making independent validation particularly significant.
NIST’s comprehensive assessment evaluated multiple aspects of Ondato’s technology, including accuracy, consistency across demographics, reliability, false positive rates (FPRs), and adaptability. The company achieved consistent scores across four Mean Absolute Error (MAE) datasets, with NIST noting minimal bias in age estimation across different demographic groups and global diversity.
The technology successfully processed various image types, including mugshots, visa photos, and border crossing images. According to NIST’s evaluation, the system maintained low false positive rates while delivering accurate age verification results.
The certification confirms that Ondato’s platforms protect sensitive information and meet regulatory requirements. This achievement follows the company’s earlier approval from KJM, Germany’s Commission for the Protection of Minors in the Media, further validating its age verification capabilities.
Liudas Kanapienis, CEO and Co-founder at Ondato, stated, “Achieving the NIST certification is a testament to our relentless focus on security and innovation.” He added that the certification provides customers with “greater assurance that their data is protected by one of the most advanced and secure age verification systems on the market.”
The certification comes as digital identity verification technologies see increasing adoption across various sectors. Recent developments include expanded use of digital ID verification in federal programs, highlighting the growing importance of validated identity verification solutions.
Ondato, recognized by the Financial Times as one of Europe’s 1000 fastest-growing companies, combines AI and biometric technology to help businesses meet regulatory requirements while maintaining privacy and security standards.
