Okta has unveiled a new Okta Devices SDK that will make it easier for organizations to add passwordless authentication to their customer-facing applications. The Devices SDK will be part of the broader Okta Devices Platform Service, and will allow for the creation of branded push notifications that enable biometric logins for end-users.
To that end, the Devices SDK specifically leverages the Okta Verify platform, allowing developers to integrate the solution into their own mobile applications. Along the way, they will be able to create custom messaging and custom action buttons. The Devices SDK is designed for a multi-channel environment, so apps built with the technology will be able to provide coverage for a range of different devices. As a result, the SDK will improve an organization’s security posture while simplifying the development process.
“We live in a multi-device world where we work, shop, and consume content across phones, laptops, and tablets,” explained Okta Chief Product Officer Diya Jolly. “This has placed an extra emphasis on today’s modern businesses to be relevant across every device. The Devices SDK takes the customizability and security of the Okta Identity Cloud and puts it in the hands of developers everywhere.”
The new SDK will register individual devices to the Okta Universal Directory to create a secure link between a device and its owner. The feature allows consumers to manage all of their devices from a centralized location and ensures consistent (and secure) service in the event that a device becomes lost or stolen.
“Binding user identity and device identity makes our digital banking products and services more seamless and secure,” added Servus Credit Union IS Risk Management VP Jakub Mamos.
Okta Devices is compatible with device-based authentication options like FaceID, and will launch in early access for iOS and Android devices in the first quarter of 2021. The solution builds on the Okta FastPass offering that debuted earlier this year, and is designed to support passwordless authentication across multiple channels and devices. Okta has also partnered with Onfido to enable face-based biometric onboarding and account recovery.
