The Ohio Casino Control Commission has approved the use of mobile driver’s licenses for identity verification at the state’s four Las Vegas-style casinos. Announced on December 18, 2024, this decision allows casino visitors to present digital identification via their smartphones for entry verification, marking a significant expansion of Ohio’s digital ID infrastructure that began with TSA checkpoint acceptance earlier in 2024.
The policy applies to Hollywood Casino Toledo, Hard Rock Casino Cincinnati, Hollywood Casino Columbus, and JACK Casino Cleveland. Visitors can now use mobile driver’s licenses, including Ohio Mobile ID, by presenting their digital identification to a reader at casino entrances. The system accommodates both Ohio residents and out-of-state visitors who possess mobile driver’s licenses that comply with the ISO 18013-5 standard for mobile identification.
The development follows Ohio’s earlier 2024 initiative to make driver’s licenses and state IDs available through Apple Wallet, enabling residents to present identification using iPhones or Apple Watches. Ohio joined a growing roster of states implementing mobile ID solutions, with ten U.S. regions now supporting digital IDs in Apple Wallet.
The implementation of digital ID verification introduces an additional option alongside traditional physical identification methods, leveraging specialized mDL reader infrastructure that ensures secure data transmission and privacy protection. The system operates within Ohio’s existing casino regulatory framework, which oversees the state’s four land-based casinos. This technology integration reflects broader trends in digital identification adoption across regulated industries, similar to recent implementations in age verification for bars and restaurants in other states.
Ohio’s gaming industry has undergone several regulatory updates in recent years. The state initiated legal sports betting on January 1, 2023, with 15 online sportsbooks currently operating in the market. The acceptance of mobile driver’s licenses at casinos represents the latest technological advancement in the state’s gaming sector, supporting industry efforts to modernize identity verification while maintaining strict compliance standards.
