An important development has come out of the International Identity and Verifiable Credentials (IVC24) Summit in Australia, which ran from October 3-4 this week: According to an online post from a key Austroads official, a demo saw digital credentials from three different continents validated with each other.
The post came by way of Christopher Goh, the agency’s National Harmonization Lead for Digital Identity. Austroads is the association of Australian and New Zealand transport agencies, representing all levels of government, and Goh is helping to oversee its efforts to pioneer mobile and digital credentials.
Goh called the Proof of Concept demo a “landmark” achievement, noting that representatives from North America, Europe, and Australia were able to verify digital credentials certified against ISO standards at a mock-up of a Transportation Security Administration checkpoint.
“Once they verified each other they then went to take flight 18013 using a US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) CAT 2 reader and successfully boarded the flight,” Goh wrote.
Olaf Grewe, National Australia Bank’s Head of Product for Digital Identity & Access was also in attendance, noting the milestone in a LinkedIn post.
“Never thought I’d be this excited to watch a line in front of a TSA check,” he wrote. “But when it’s part of proving interoperability between AU, EU, and US mobile driver license implementations, it’s a different story.”
Beyond the TSA, participating organizations included Idemia and the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators, along with representatives of the French and Dutch governments, and of Potential, one of the large-scale consortia working to pioneer the European Digital Identity Wallet. Goh also expressed gratitude to “the Wallet providers who made it happen and delivered a PoC for Australia,” adding, “I can’t name you and the people, but you know who you are and hopefully I was able to thank you personally at Interop.”
