Oakland International Airport will be using IDEMIA’s MFACE facial recognition solution to verify the identities of departing travelers. The platform will be installed in Terminal 1, and will specifically be used to screen passengers who are boarding international flights.
MFACE itself is a high-throughput facial recognition solution that can confirm people’s identities in real time. The solution is able to handle the high volume of people passing through an airport, and it will allow US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to comply with its biometric data collection requirements.
IDEMIA has already installed a similar face identification system at the Tom Bradley Terminal at the Los Angeles International Airport, and is moving forward with a self-boarding e-gate pilot at the Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey. The former project was carried out in collaboration with EASIER, while the latter was announced in August and has the backing of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
IDEMIA will not be storing any passenger data as the technology provider, though CBP does retain personal information and carries out matches in the cloud. In Oakland, MFACE will be paired with IDEMIA’s 3D video tracking solution to provide an even higher level of security.
“Our technology significantly speeds up passenger clearance, as we can recognize faces within fractions of a second, with absolutely no compromise on security,” said IDEMIA North America Travel and Transport VP Lisa Sullivan. “It requires no touch and limited interaction with the system making the boarding process as streamlined and stress free as possible.”
MFACE is available as a standalone or a desktop unit, or as an OEM kit that lets manufacturers integrate the solution into the body of another device. IDEMIA, meanwhile, was one of the top performers in the NIST’s airport simulation test earlier this year. The company’s facial recognition technology is also being used in a biometric screening pilot in Brazil.
