Nuance Communications is still one of the most supportive workplaces for LGBTQ employees in the United States, at least according to the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation. The company was named as one of the “Best Places to Work for LGBTQ Equality” for the second year in a row, repeating the perfect score it received on last year’s Corporate Equality Index.
The HRC’s Corporate Equality Index was set up to evaluate company policies that relate to LGBTQ representation. Nuance Communications was one of more than 680 organizations that scored a perfect 100 percent in 2020, a number that dramatically improves on the 560 organizations that accomplished the feat in 2019. The increase indicates that companies are starting to take LGBTQ representation more seriously, and are implementing policies to cultivate a safer office.
“We believe creating an inclusive environment where everyone can be their true and authentic selves drives better business results,” said Nuance Executive VP and Chief People Officer Beth Conway. “We are committed to fostering a culture that embraces diversity and supports our employees. We are incredibly proud to receive this distinction.”
While only around 680 companies achieved a perfect score, the HRC recognized more than 1,050 companies for their efforts in the LGTBQ space. Organizations that do well on the Corporate Equality Index have embraced non-discrimination policies, offered inclusive benefits packages, and made a public commitment to LGBTQ equality, amongst other initiatives. For example, Nuance specifically prohibits any form of discrimination, and has signed the Business Statement for Transgender Equality and an amicus brief to support LGBTQ workers.
Nuance managed to achieve a perfect score while going through a significant corporate transition. The company announced that its automotive division would be spun off as an independent entity, and followed through with the official formation of Cerence in October.
