The Human Rights Campaign Foundation has named Nuance Communications one of 2019’s “Best Places to Work for LGBTQ Equality” in its Corporate Equality Index.
The Foundation bills itself as America’s largest national lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer civil rights organization, with over 3 million members and supporters across the country. Its Corporate Equality Index is a benchmarking report that scores companies based on metrics such as whether a given firm “Prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation for all operations”, offers “Three LGBTQ internal training and education best practices”, maintains an “Employee group or diversity council”, and so on.
In being named one of the “Best Places to Work for LGBTQ Equality” in this year’s report, Nuance joins over 560 other companies that received a 100 percent score. It’s a fitting distinction for a company whose business is, after all, identity. But it also suggests a more general organizational competence; studies have suggested that greater diversity can make a workforce more effective, and in its CEI report, the Human Rights Campaign Foundation notes that 13 of the top 20 Fortune 500 companies, including Apple, GM, and Walmart, hold a 100 percent rating.
“Creating a supportive workplace where all of our employees can be their true and authentic selves is of the utmost importance to us,” commented Nuance VP and Chief Human Resources Officer Beth Conway in a statement. “We are proud to receive this distinction from the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, and to foster an inclusive and diverse environment that values our employees’ unique experiences, perspectives, and contributions.”
