The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) published its Iris Exchange (IREX) IV report on July 11, which while receiving quite a bit of attention for the finding that age is not a major factor of iris degradation, also compared the performance of iris algorithms from a variety of commercial and academic providers. Of the tested algorithms, the technology developed by MorphoTrust USA (Safran) for purpose of iris recognition proved to be not only among the fastest of the group but also the most accurate in all testing scenarios.
The previous NIST report, IREX III, revealed MorphoTrust’s technology as demonstrating the highest accuracy and best balance between that same statistic, template size and speed. In fact, in all previous IREX evaluations, the company’s eye scanning solution achieved exemplary results.
Thanks to the findings of the most recent IREX study regarding the long term integrity and stability of iris features, iris identification solutions are gaining traction in government sectors around the world in both economic and defense applications. MorphoTrust’s technology stands out with its ability to continue to produce highly accurate results when faced with exceptionally large populations while still maintaining impressive speeds.
Dr. Brian Martin, MorphoTrust’s director of biometric research summarizes:
“The accuracy of iris recognition, together with its remarkably fast search speed and efficient small template size, make it an ideal biometric for next generation identity applications. This newest NIST test confirms MorphoTrust’s technical leadership in iris identification and demonstrates our team’s commitment to developing biometric technologies that excel in speed and accuracy on real-world data.”
