The NIEMOpen Biometrics Subcommittee Executive Committee (NBSEC) has announced that it will host a “Virtual Biometrics Town Hall Event” at the end of the month, aiming to update the biometrics community on its work and to collect input.
The NIEMOpen Biometrics Subcommittee Executive Committee (NBSEC) is a governing body within the National Information Exchange Model (NIEM) framework, focusing on biometric data standards and interoperability. Established in July 2012, the subcommittee operates under the Office of Biometric Identity Management (OBIM) within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
In addition to the OBIM, the NBSEC consists of the Department of Defense Forensic Biometric Agency (DOD DFBA), the Department of Justice Criminal Justice Information Services Federal Bureau of Investigation (DOJ CJIS FBI), and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
According to its announcement, the event will include an update on the Forensic Electronic Data Interchange Specification, to be delivered by the DFBA, as well as information about new developments in the National Institute of Standards and Technology Update.
Katherine Escobar, the current chair of the NIEMOpen Project Governing Board, will also discuss the NIEM Transition to OASIS (Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards), an international consortium that develops and promotes open standards for the global information society.
Also notable is a planned speech by James Wayman entitled “What Biometric Testing Doesn’t Tell Us”. Wayman has been a prominent figure in the field for decades; among other things, he was a primary technical assessor for ISO 17025 accreditation of biometric testing laboratories within the National Voluntary Laboratory Assessment Program, and he is an influential voice as a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
The event is scheduled to run from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM EST on August 29.
