NEXT Biometrics is providing the fingerprint sensor for the first biometric payment terminal to get certified for use in Nigeria. The Point-of-Sale (POS) terminal is manufactured by Newland Payment Technology, which has integrated NEXT’s FAP 20 sensor into the device.
The certification was granted after the Nigeria Inter-bank Settlement System (NIBSS) determined that the Newland terminal met all of the necessary requirements. With the decision, the terminal is now cleared for commercial deployments, allowing merchants in the country to use the terminal to accept payments from their customers.
NEXT agreed to supply Newland with fingerprint sensors in May of 2019. The manufacturer placed an order for 6,000 sensors at the end of September, and NEXT has now revealed that Newland ordered those sensors in anticipation that it would soon be gaining access to the Nigerian market. The company shipped its first batch of sensors to Newland back in February.
“We are pleased to see that our sensor is the first to become certified in Nigeria for financial inclusion applications covering the largest country in Africa,” said NEXT CEO Peter Heuman. “The NIBSS certification demonstrates our commitment to support our business partners.”
“We have developed a unique biometric POS device fit for the African continent,” added Newland President Kazem Aminaee. “We are excited to launch our POS certified product in Nigeria and other African countries.”
NEXT recently revealed that its FAP 20 sensor will also be appearing in Credence ID’s new ECO devices, which are geared towards the African, Latin American, and Southeast Asian markets.
