NEXT Biometrics Wins Government Smart Card Order

NEXT Biometrics has received a major order for fingerprint sensors for smart cards to be used in a government application, the company has announced. The order is for 250,000 sensors, and while the client can’t be named, in a statement announcing the deal NEXT CEO Tore Etholm Idsøe indicated that “[t]he end customer needs fully flexible sensors”.

The arrangement will take a bit of time to come to fruition. NEXT Biometrics is currently working with Taiwan-based display maker Innolux to ramp up its sensor production, and the company says it won’t be able to mass produce the flexible sensors until that work is finished. Shipments of the sensors are expected to start going out in the second half of next year.

It’s a considerable win for NEXT Biometrics given the increasing competition in the smart card sector from other fingerprint sensor makers. For its part, NEXT has been honing its sights on smart cards since the end of last year, and that strategic maneuvering has been paying off in this and another deal announced earlier this year.
