NEXT Biometrics has attained ISO/IEC 17839 standard compliance for its smart card technology, and has received its first major order for biometric smart cards, the company has announced.
The undisclosed buyer’s initial order is valued at about $1.46 million, with the products slated to ship in the third quarter of this year. NEXT Biometrics has not revealed how many units this would entail, but has asserted that next year shipments could rise to 650,000 units. Moreover, in a statement announcing the deal NEXT Biometrics CEO Tore Etholm-Idsøe asserted that while the initial order is for rigid smart cards, next year could see the delivery of flexible smart cards based on NEXT Biometrics’ patented Active Thermal technology. “The on-going development with our customer is aiming to ship a mass-produced, fully flexible and ISO-compliant biometric smartcard that will meet all requirements in this segment during 2017,” Etholm-Idsøe said.
The deal represents the company’s first major smart card order since it announced it would be targeting the smart card market at the end of last year.
In announcing the smart card order NEXT Biometrics also proclaimed that its Q1 revenues for this year have far exceeded those of Q1 2015, reaching $640,000, compared to $290,000. While the company did not contextualize these figures within its broader fiscal situation in its statement, the announcement appears to signal NEXT Biometrics’ seriousness as a competitor in the smart cards market.
