New York has become the latest state to embrace mobile driver’s license technology, and the fifth to roll out a solution developed by IDEMIA.
The rollout means that New York residents can download a mobile ID app from the Apple App Store or Google Play, set up a virtual driver’s license or state ID, and then present it as their official ID at TSA checkpoints at JFK, LaGuardia, and 27 other airports across America.
IDEMIA and New York authorities have placed a strong emphasis on security and privacy regarding the mobile ID system. It adheres to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard for mobile driver’s licenses (ISO 18013-5) and features a selfie-based identity verification process, which asks users to upload photos of their physical driver’s license or state ID alongside a selfie photo, and uses facial recognition to confirm that their images match.
It also offers better privacy protections than a traditional ID. When using the mDL at TSA checkpoints, there is no need to present a physical ID displaying various bits of personally identifiable information such as home address and date of birth. Instead, the user simply authenticates on their smartphone using a face or fingerprint scan, or by entering a PIN, and the device wirelessly validates that they are the registered ID holder.
“This is an exciting way to provide identification without having to dig through your wallet or purse to find your physical document,” explained DMV Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder. “Rather than handing over your physical ID with lots of personal information, the Mobile ID gives you greater control over what personal data you share.”
The TSA’s Federal Security Director for LaGuardia Airport, Robert Duffy, attested that the app is a “state-of-the-art digital ID”, while state Governor Kathy Hochul expressed enthusiasm about its technological innovation, saying, “We’re thrilled to give New Yorkers access to this cutting-edge technology which provides convenience and added security for Mobile ID users and those who accept it.”
The app also empowers the DMV to push on-demand updates to mobile credentials, ensuring that mDLs stay up to date, and issuing real-time alerts in the event that an ID is revoked or cancelled.
