Zwipe is offering a closer look at its biometric payment card technology. The company has posted a video offering the first public demonstration of its Single Silicon Biometric System on Card solution, Zwipe Pay ONE.
The demo is conducted by Zwipe CEO André Løvestam, who begins the video by explaining the benefits of biometric payment cards more broadly, namely their safety, security, and “coolness – just the attraction of using a new and innovative technology,” as he puts it.
“The biometric Secure Element combines in a single chip the functionality of an EMV chip, an MCU, and other components”, Løvestam explains, before going on to detail the architecture of the card, including a passive inlay, the ISO contact plate module, and a third-generation fingerprint sensor from Zwipe’s partner, IDEX.
“This means that the inlay in the card can be passive, meaning there are no components on it, enabling a standard card production process using hot lamination and existing equipment,” Løvestam explains.
From there, the chief executive performs a sample contactless transaction, scanning his thumb on the card as he taps to pay.
It’s a visual illustration of the kind of transaction that Zwipe and other pioneers of the biometric payment cards space have been evangelizing for years now. And it’s an illustration of just how close this technology is to mass deployments. Major banks in France have unveiled biometric credit cards poised for large-scale commercial launches this year, and Zwipe itself has been gearing up for the commercialization phase through various partnerships, including one with a Swedish card issuer with plans for a commercial launch later in 2021.
