Samsung has launched two new sensors with potential biometric applications. The ISOCELL Vizion 63D is a time-of-flight sensor for capturing high-resolution 3D images, while the ISOCELL Vizion 931 is a global shutter sensor for capturing “dynamic moments”, as Samsung put it in its announcement of the sensors.
Samsung noted that the Vizion 63D is ideal for use in robots, XR devices, and “facial authentication” applications, while the Vizion 931 “is optimal for iris recognition, eye tracking as well as facial and gesture detection in head-mounted display devices like XR headsets.”
Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensors, like the ISOCELL Vizion 63D, operate by emitting light signals and measuring the time it takes for these signals to bounce back from objects, thereby calculating distance and creating 3D representations of the scene. This makes them ideal for applications requiring depth perception and spatial awareness, such as in robotics or extended reality (XR).
In contrast, Global Shutter sensors, exemplified by the ISOCELL Vizion 931, capture an entire image simultaneously, as opposed to line-by-line like traditional rolling shutter cameras. This allows them to freeze fast-moving scenes without distortion, making them well-suited for capturing dynamic movements in applications like motion tracking and high-speed photography.
Samsung’s ISOCELL Vizion 63D sensor, a ToF sensor, offers key advantages in high-resolution 3D imaging and depth sensing with exceptional detail and clarity, ideal for applications in robotics, extended reality (XR), and facial recognition. Its integrated depth-sensing hardware and small pixel size allow for precise 3D depth information capture and enhanced light sensitivity, leading to sharper images and reduced power consumption.
The ISOCELL Vizion 931 sensor, a Global Shutter sensor, excels in capturing rapid movements without distortion, crucial for motion-tracking in XR devices, gaming systems, and drones. It achieves high quantum efficiency with innovative light absorption techniques and supports multi-drop connectivity, enabling seamless integration with multiple cameras and providing greater design flexibility for device manufacturers.
Samsung says that both sensors are currently shipping to OEMs.
