Aptly-named market research firm Research and Markets has released a new report on the global biometrics systems market. The report, dubbed “The Global Government Biometric Systems Market 2014-2024” in a display of the firm’s usual flair for prosaic language, notes a number of continuing trends in the industry that are expected to unfold over the next several years.
The report indicates that governments of various levels remain the biggest spenders on biometric systems, both for security and administrative purposes. A small example of this is the recent pattern of local law enforcement agencies adopting fingerprint and facial recognition technologies in recent weeks, though of course the global trend extends to major security areas such as border control and transport terminal security. The report notes that Western countries have been the earliest adopters of this kind of technology, but countries in the Asia Pacific and Latin American regions are showing increasing interest. Meanwhile, there are some grand experiments unfolding that are important market drivers but will take some time to play out, such as India’s endeavor to create a national biometric registry of citizens.
In the private sector, there is a growing pattern of consolidation as large companies like Apple and Google realize the potential of biometric technology and start to buy up smaller developers. All of these developments have to contend with longstanding issues of digital security and cyber theft, civil rights concerns, and potential for abuse, but all told the market outlook appears to be very positive.
